Tracking roof leaks: When you first notice a roof leak, arm yourself with a strong flashlight and visit your attic. First, check the roof area directly above the damp or dripping spot on the wall or ceiling. In most cases, you'll notice the origin of the leak will be higher up on the roof. During dry weather, look for water stains, streaks or rot on rafters and sheathing and follow them uphill to the highest point. If you can't get up on the roof to fix the problem immediately, mark the spot for future reference. Inspect areas where pipes or vent penetrate the roof, as a general rule. Water stains here often indicate missing, damaged or improperly caulked vent or pipe flashings.
If the flashing appears good, but you still noticed water stains where bagpipes or soil stacks penetrate the ceiling, the problem could be caused by moisture condensation due to poor roof ventilation. Also be sure to inspect the roof framing and siding where the roof meets the exterior walls, along walls in where dormers or chimneys penetrate the roof.
Roofing Sheets: Each sheet of roofing covers 26 square feet as a general rule. Because the sheets must be overlapped when installed, it takes 4.5 sheets to cover 100 square feet of roof surface. You'll need 24 nails to install each sheet and 38 nails for each ridge cap. To find the total number of closure strips you'll need, first determine the total length - in inches - of all the eaves and twice the length of the hips, valleys, and rakes. Divide this total by 44 (the length in inches of one closure strip) to obtain the number of strips needed.
Each tile of Onduline roofing covers 6.5 square feet. Because tiles must be overlapped when installed, 24 tiles will cover 100 square feet of roof surface. To install each tile, you will need 12 barbed roofing nails and 12 galvanized, ring shanked, washed nails for each tile. We can assist with this problem.
